Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

  1. Journal of Ottoman Studies has the status of "refereed journal" in ULAKBIM DergiPark platform.
  2. Our journal is an international journal published twice a year (June and December).
  3. It publishes peer-reviewed original articles that contribute to historical research in all fields of Ottoman history.
  4. The journal is published in Turkish and English.
  5. The manuscripts submitted to the journal are peer-reviewed by a board of referees in a double-blind process after being subjected to the editorial process in terms of purpose, scope, method, and writing principles.
  6. In addition to peer-reviewed articles, the journal publishes symposium, seminar and conference proceedings, technical and project notes, reports, literature and book reviews.
  7. Articles submitted to the journal must not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.
  8. The reported research should be conducted in accordance with ethical rules and citations must be provided in the text. As a result of the screening for the main text of the article, the upper limit of the acceptable similarity rate is 10%, excluding bibliography and references. The plagiarism check must be documented by the author.
  9. The journal does not charge any submission fee, editorial processing fee, or publication fee for articles, manuscripts, etc., and no fee is paid to authors for published articles.
  10. The views expressed in the articles published in the journal are the responsibility of the author, and the views expressed do not represent the views of the journal.

Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers, Authors and Editorial Board

    1. Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers
      • Reviews should be unbiased.
      • Reviewers must be experts in the field they are reviewing, and if they do not have sufficient knowledge of the field, they should decline the offer to review.
      • Reviewers should not have a conflict of interest with the study or the authors.
      • Due to the principle of confidentiality, reviewers should destroy the studies they have reviewed after the evaluation process.
      • They should evaluate objectively only the content of the study. They should not allow nationality, gender, religious beliefs, political beliefs and commercial concerns to influence the evaluation.
      • As part of their responsibilities as educators and trainers, reviewers should guide the authors and avoid offensive and derogatory comments and statements about the inadequacies of the author(s).
      • They should carry out the work they accept for evaluation in a timely manner and within the framework of the above ethical responsibilities.
    2. Ethical Responsibilities for Authors
      • Articles submitted for publication should not be in violation of scientific publication ethics (such as plagiarism, forgery, distortion, republication, unfair authorship, not specifying the supporting organization).
      • In case of direct quotation from other works during the research process of the article, the author must be cited.
      • For special collection/archive resources that require copyright/permission (visual materials, maps, etc.), the data must have usage rights and necessary permissions.
      • The bibliography list must be complete, and the sources cited must be indicated.
      • In order for the findings of the study to be verified by others, the methods and sources should be clearly and precisely defined.
      • The author cannot have his/her article in the application process of more than one journal at the same time. Each submission can be started after the completion of the previous submission.
      • The author must guarantee that the work is original and has not been published elsewhere in any language.
      • Multiple publications resulting from a single research project must be clearly indicated and the primary publication must be cited.
    3. Ethical Responsibilities of Editors
        • Editors are responsible for ensuring the quality of the material they publish and for maintaining the integrity of the published record.

Based on the reviewers' recommendations, the Editorial Board may take one of the following courses of action:

          • Detailed information on the process for authors can be found in the Editorial Guidelines.
          • In appointing reviewers, the editors are aware of any conflicts of interest between authors and reviewers.
          • Reviewers are encouraged to use neutral, scientific, and objective language when evaluating manuscripts.
          • Inappropriate language and unscientific reviews will be blocked or censored.
